Hilgemann is a Dutch sculptor, born in Germany. From the beginning, elementary research into the subject matter has characterized Ewerdt Hilgemann's work. After experiments with subtle, white wooden light reliefs in the 1960s that follow the ZERO style, he condensed his activity as a conceptual sculptor on the use of natural stone, steel with geometric shapes in series: positive versus negative.
In 1980 he introduced arbitrariness and natural forces beyond his sphere of influence into his work. In doing so, he was confronted with the unpredictability of the laws of nature, to which he had to adapt quickly and which he had to anticipate.
His works can be seen in a large number of international museum collections. In 2013 there was a major exhibition in Park Avenue, New York featuring the artist's large stainless steel structures. In 2020 the museum Kröller Müller presented his work in a solo exhibition.
