Lucia Mrakovcic (Antwerp, 1982) studied sculpture at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, where she now also teaches.
In search of the interwoven life behind things, she collects, cuts up and sews together reality. Her almost zero-waste practice stems from a sense of wonder at the everyday, the most insignificant things. What sets her work apart is the emotional seriousness with which she does this. Discarded objects are held with the same intensity as a photograph of a loved one. This critical yet tender relationship lays bare the ambiguity in how we produce, consume and value things. This leads to a multimedia practice which, driven by gut instinct, recycles, reconfigures and revalues not only itself but all the life around it.
