Riki Mijling

Riki Mijling is a visual artist from Nijmegen. She studied at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in den Bosch. She currently lives and works in Amsterdam and in Amoreias Gare (Portugal).

Mijling's work can be considered part of the tradition of geometric abstraction. Her language of form shows her love for building and the changeable construction. She succeeds in making us as viewers fascinated by the phenomenon of space. Better said: by conquering that space, in a physical, philosophical or purely functional sense. Her shapes are sleek and essential. The sculptures can be moved and brought together in various compositions. Not only do the images change by walking around them, but Mijling also allows to actually change the image itself physically. Nature also intervenes in the works. The use of rusting steel and burnt metal surfaces creates an interplay between the work and the environment and thus links nature and culture.

Her sculptures are created systematically but at the same time through a design process driven by intuition. In doing so, however, it applies mathematical laws, such as the golden ratio. This approach results in series of geometric sculptures, created from a logical sequence of reinterpretation and reduction.
