With Be My Guest , Coppejans Gallery invites an external guest every September to take a fresh look at the gallery, its artists and its operations. For this edition, we are handing the reins to Antoinette De Stigter, who for many years was the driving force behind the Amsterdam gallery Art Affairs.

With Art Affairs, De Stigter developed a distinctive programme centred on conceptual and minimalist art, with a particular focus on experimentation, research and artistic positions that defy easy categorisation. For It’s in my nature , she brings together artists from her own history with artists from Coppejans Gallery.

The title refers to what is inherent to humankind and nature. To humankind, which acts, organises, builds, collects and seeks to impart meaning based on its own nature. But also to that which repeatedly eludes our control: nature, which grows, changes, disrupts and follows its own logic. No matter how hard we try to understand, structure or control it, it can never be fully comprehended.

It’s in my nature thus becomes an exhibition about instinct and control, about human intervention and natural processes, but also about the artist’s attitude towards that which cannot be fully predicted.

At the same time, this year’s Be My Guest is also an encounter between two gallery practices. The collaboration with Antoinette De Stigter is not just about curating an exhibition, but also about experience, mentorship and the craft of running a gallery: about observing, selecting, guiding artists, taking risks and developing a substantive direction over many years.

For a moment, Coppejans Gallery is viewed through the eyes of someone who has themselves built up a long history in the avant-garde and conceptual art. This is precisely where the essence of Be My Guestlies: making space for a different perspective, and discovering what that reveals.
