KRÖLLER-MÜLLER MUSEUM LAUNCHES THE HILGEMANN FUND

On 10 May 2022 a new fund will be launched in the Kröller-Müller Museum: the Hilgemann Fund. It was established in 2021 by visual artist Ewerdt Hilgemann and his wife Antoinette de Stigter. The fund is intended to support ‘idiosyncratic sculpture’, or spatial art in the broad sense. Support can take the form of a purchase, an exhibition or a publication. The fund is administered by the Kröller-Müller Museum.

With the Hilgemann Fund Ewerdt Hilgemann wants to give something ‘back’ for the rich career he has had. Cooperation with other artists has always played an important role for him, as it did for Antoinette de Stigter, who in 1989 founded Art Affairs, a gallery in Amsterdam that specialises in international modern art with a strong conceptual slant.

First acquisition of the Hilgemann Fund: Jeroen Jongeleen
The first allocation from the Hilgemann Fund is a contribution to the purchase in 2021 of six video works by Jeroen Jongeleen (Apeldoorn, 1967). Jongeleen often works in public space. During the first lockdown in 2020, he will start running in deserted urban places, initially for long distances but eventually in the form of a circle. A drone follows his movements and shows how Jongeleen, while running, leaves a trail behind him on car parks and forbidden city sites, but also in a landscape near the Kröller-Müller Museum. A spatial gesture by an artist stuck in a self-made hamster wheel, thus drawing a parallel with the corona pandemic, which man himself created and subsequently imprisoned.

The contribution to the acquisition of Jeroen Jongeleen’s work was made in close consultation with Ewerdt Hilgemann and Antoinette de Stigter. The presentation of Jeroen Jongeleen Running in circles, can be seen from 12 March through 30 October 2022.
