Koen Kievits is one of the artists selected for the Paper Art Biennale at the CODA Museum in Apeldoorn.
Koen's selected work mainly involves removing material. He removes part or sometimes even all of the photographs and prints. He does this by scratching or sanding. The empty spaces that this creates form a new image. In his work In and out of sight he has torn an entire image from the paper. The white, frayed pieces of paper that remain resemble a snowy landscape in which you discover new shapes. Koen considers control important, but he also allows himself to be guided by the material. In and out of sight , for example, was created by sticking a sheet of photographic paper onto an aluminium plate, from which he removed the top layers. It is almost impossible to determine exactly how much will come off. In places where more is removed, you can see the dull grey colour of the aluminium shining through. This creates different shades by chance. Those who look at the artwork can discover for themselves what landscape they see in it.
The exhibition is open from 25 May to 2 November 2025.
