Thomas Baumgärtel is a German graffiti artist known under the pseudonym Bananensprayer. He is well known for his typical banana that he uses in all kinds of artistic contexts.
He started his artistic career in 1983. From 1985 to 1990 he studied art at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne. Afterwards he also studied psychology at the University of Cologne. In 1986 he first sprayed his banana on the facade of a gallery. Afterwards he became very active in the art world. In the years that followed, his work appeared everywhere in the street. The typical stylized banana adorns facades of places where culture is experienced and promoted. Over the years, this print is comparable to a 'star' for restaurants, but applicable to museums and galleries.
Coppejans Gallery represents this artist in Belgium. Stijn Coppejans has regularly curated exhibitions with the artist since 2017. Two books have been published since then.
