100 YEARS OF BEUYS: ADRIAAN REES SPREADS BUTTER ON OUR WINDOW

In a first performance at the start of our project 100 Years Beuys, three actors smeared 10 kilograms of vegetable butter on our gallery window for Adriaan Rees.

For his performance Adriaan Rees walked onto Falcon Square wearing a mask and flanked by two drummers. In the OpenCage opposite the gallery, three actors in felt hare suits were asleep in a field of flowers with 1,000 chrysanthemums. Once awoken by the artist, they left the cage and smeared the gallery with grease.

Grease is a very symbolic material in Beuys’ work. It stood for transformation and protection. Corporeality and the Eurasian idea were also central elements in Rees’ performance. The performance was the starting point for a series of 25 activities.
